The dude room.
A small illustration of one of the private ten-cent beds which were located in what was known to the boys as the "dude" room. There isn't much to see here, but you can get an idea of how the beds were curtained off. The date and newspaper source are unknown, but given the dates of the other articles on the scrapbook page on which this clipping was found, it is likely from the 1890s.
Name: Rustie E-mail, website: walnut127@yahoo.com Newsies fan, history buff, both, neither? Both. I’m a sucker for just about anything “Newsies,” but learning the facts of the Lodging House, the boys and the city is fascinating. I can’t get enough of their surroundings, and the little side stories such as “Narrow Mike” and his unusual selling gimmick and the "Walking Mudgutter" bring the real newsboys to life.
I can’t say that I have a favorite section at this site. I love it all, but the photographs and the maps you’ve provided are priceless. The visuals add to my appreciation of “Newsies,” my great affection of the city and, strangely enough, have lead to my discovering some new information on my own family’s history. Dinner or just a bed? Well, I had a good day sellin’ so if they aren’t already taken, I think I’ll try one of those private beds in the dude room. How was your visit to the Lodging House? I’ve had plenty of visits to the LH and each time is better than the one before. Any questions you'd like to see answered? None that I can think of. You’ve already provided more information than I thought possible.
I know what you mean about the anecdotes really bringing the history to life--I can read any number of articles about facts and figures and suddenly I'll come across a story's a wonderful reminder of the human side of things.
I'm also glad to hear you've found out more on your own family history. How exciting. Thanks for visiting!
Hi I'm doing my senior thesis for undergrad on the newsboys strike and I wanted to have your name to footnote you in my paper. Thanks a bunch and thanks for the helpful website!
Name: Karen E-mail, website: km39497@msn.com Newsies fan, history buff, both, neither? Looking for my grandfather who supposedly stayed at a Newsboys Lodging house. He was an orphan. Dinner or just a bed? How was your visit to the Lodging House? Any questions you'd like to see answered? Are there any kind of records kept about the boys who were at these home? Thank you
Name: Taylor E-mail, website: blondesmile94@yahoo.com Newsies fan, history buff, both, neither? EVERYTHING NEWSIES Dinner or just a bed? Both How was your visit to the Lodging House? Good Any questions you'd like to see answered? I have heard many things about the Brooklyn newsies having the 'docks' yet looking at the picture it seems as though any kind of docks would be far away. Could you email me what you have found out about the toughest newsies and their famous docks.
I just wanna say that I am a MAJOR newsboy fan and I have studied them for a long time and most of your information is not accurate. I don't want to be a jerk, but its true. Most of the "Historical Newsboy Names" are only from the movie "Newsies" and not authentic newsies.
I'm not quite sure what to make of your comment since the anonymous sweeping generalizations seem a little over the top, but if you'd like to discuss it I'm willing to do so. I have sources for each of those names; which ones do you have questions about?
Thank-you Mr. Henson for listing my book, "Extra! Extra! The Orphan Trains and Newsboys of New York" found exclusively at www.theorphantrain.com Like you, I have done in-depth research about the newsboys. Moreover, individuals can realize the connection of the newsboys to the children of the trains. I believe I am the first author to expose this reality. My book has been recognized as embracing hauntingly good photographs of the newsboys and bootblacks with excellent prose. Your website is fantastic!
You can use the image of the newsboy sculpture if you like
I would be very honored if you would like to use a photograph of my newsboy sculpture on your website. Please just list my name along with it. Just download them from my site and upload them to your site http://www.creativesculpture.com/newsboy_gallery.html
Here are some links and if you would like to read the journal that I made about the creation of the newsboy and my own research you can find it at http://www.creativesculpture.com/texaspress.html Oh, and I made the journal into some videos.

Of course I could not put all of my research into the videos that is found at the site.

I am working on a film set in NYC in 1864. We have a lot of street scenes and I want to fill up the air with the sound of the news boys.
I have lots of access to the headlines of the day and I'm hoping you can give me some ideas on how the boys elaborated on the headlines as they called them out.
How did they pitch them? What was the language? What did they say to make the headlines for interesting?
Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you.

In the morning When the sun is a lonely light just over the hill When the world is awake and yet all things are still My thoughts keep returning to you as they always will
In the morning I am watching and waiting to see the sun shine And I'm feeling your presence so sweet on my mind For I know you're the love and the light of my life for all time
Juliana How your name brings me awake like the first light of dawn Juliana How it comes to the heart like the wind from the wings of a song Juliana You're my sweet heart's desire You're the face of a dream I have drawn
In the evening With the sweet orange blossoms caressing the air I stare at the sky and I see your face there With the moon in your eyes and the indigo night in your hair
